Judy Henske

My lovely friend Robin turned me on recently to Mrs. Judy Henske, and i'm in love! Hailing from Chippewa Falls - home of the supercomputer and Leinenkugels Beer - Judy's a one woman riot with a killer voice that will knock the socks right off yer feet. She became popular in the 60's, especially among the beat crowd - some hack even styled her "the queen of the beatniks"- and the moniker stuck. While working in NewYork, she started a romantic relationship with Woody Allen, which allegedly inspired him to use Judy as a model for the character Annie Hall.

This is my dear Robin: one of the most beautiful people I know! (pic stolen from her Flikr)

She's away on amazing adventures. She's living in Amsterdam for a year. I miss her so!
But this music makes me happy. I hope it will make you happy too.

Last Night A DJ Saved My Life

Rolling Stone magazine declared Last Night a DJ Saved My Life as "one of the greatest songs ever written about being a girl, listening to the radio or any combination of the two".

And when it comes to being a girl, nobody does it better than the Diva herself Mrs. Mariah Carey, i.e., Butterfly, the Emancipation of mimi, and GLITTER!

Here's Mariah busting the JAM:

Last Night a DJ Saved My Life (Featuring Busta Rhymes, DJ Clue?, & Fabolous) - Mariah Carey

MIRAGE..........................................................................................................................

The song was remixed by the artist Mirage for the After Dark compilation by the folks at Italians Do It Better. The compilation is hand jiven, booty shakin, pure euro disco fun!

INDEEP...........................................................................................................................

The original version of the song was created by the 1980s NY based R&B/New Wave group Indeep. The group had limited success and Last Night a DJ Saved My Life became their one hit wonder.

The tubular Linda Blair

Giant Snow globes, a whole lot of green screen, and an electric keytar! What more can you ask for...The Book of Love really delivers on this one:

Alice Everyday - Book Of Love

Even the Possessed like their synthy jams!
Linda Blair would definitely have some mad convulsions and project some serious demon vomit to the Book of Love's synthy version of The Exorcist theme song- Tubular Bells.

Tubular Bells - Book of Love - Book of Love

Here's the original version of Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield. The song was heavily popularized after its use as the opening theme for The Exorcist.

Tubular Bells, Pt. 1 - Mike Oldfield

Here's some rare footage from The Exorcist. I recommend watching it with both versions of Tubular Bells... super creepy! Apparently theatres gave out vomit bags to movie goers when The Exorcist screened, Awesome!

Soul Jazz Records

Soul Jazz Records is a British based record label that started in the early nineties. They release compilations of predominately black music, including soul, dub, reggae, and jazz. More recently they have expanded their catalog with some pretty amazing post-punk, electronica, and world music albums. Below are some choice songs for your listening pleasure.....

The Sisters Love were an early 70's soul and funk troupe, born from the ashes of Ray Charles' back up group The Raelets.
Give Me Your Love - The Sisters Love

Marilyn Barbarin is featured on the compilation New Orleans Funk: The Original Sounds Of Funk 1960-75. Her voice reminds me of Candi Staton. She seems like a pretty groovy lady.

Reborn - Marilyn Barbarin

This Next track is from the compilation titled The Sexual Life of The Savages. The record traces the story of Brazilian musicians who gathered influence from U.S. acts like ESG, Liquid Liquid and Arto Lindsay.
Tao Perto - Cabine C

Mantronix is the best of the NY club scene from the 1980s. The album features a mix of old-school hip hop, disco, electro, and club tracks.
Ladies (Full Length) - Mantronix

This track is off a 12" release called
Big Apple Rappin'. Soul Jazz will release a Big Apple Rappin' 2x double album in early '09.

T Ski Valley / Catch the Beat (Dimi & Mousse Ts Old School Mix) - Various

This track is off the compilation
Miami Sound: Rare Funk and Soul from Miami, Florida 1967-74. Helene Smith was a leading gal in he Miami Soul scene, along side the great Betty Wright.
You Got To Be A Man - Helene Smith

The Last two tracks are from one of my all time favorite albums -
New York Noise Volume 1: Dance Music from the New York Underground.

Liquid Liquid was a NY City post punk band that was active from 1980-83. This track is super hot!

Optimo - Liquid Liquid

And Finally, the great great

Popeye the sailor man meets sinbad

In this two reel animated short directed by Dave fleischer, Popeye saves olive oyl from the brute Sinbad the Sailor! And it's all in technicolor!

The 3-D look was created using a device called the Stereoptical Camera or Setback, which was invented by The technicians at Fleischer Studios in 1934. Their apparatus used three-dimensional miniature sets built to the scale of the animation artwork.

The animation cels were placed so that various objects could pass in front of and behind them, and the entire scene was shot using a horizontal camera. It looked something like this:

The results are stunning and really bring to life all the captured creatures on Sinbad's island.

The cartoon has been deemed "culturally significant" and has been selected for preservation in the National Film Registry, as well as being voted #17 of the 50 greatest cartoons ever!

Spinach
Apparently the idea for Popeye's power food to be spinach came from a study which, because of a misprint, attributed to spinach ten times its actual iron content. The error was discovered sometime in the 1930s but not widely publicized until 1981!

Watch the cartoon!
